Merge Multiple PDFs Into One File

When related documents are saved as separate PDF files, combining them into one document can make them easier to manage, share, and keep together. Smallertools' PDF merger lets you select multiple PDF files and combine their pages into a single PDF.
You can add files from your device using the file picker or drag them directly into the upload area. After adding the files, the tool displays them in a numbered list along with their filenames and file sizes. This gives you an opportunity to check the documents before starting the merge.

Arrange PDFs in the Right Order

The order of the files determines the order of the pages in the final PDF. If the files are not in the sequence you need, simply drag them into the correct position before clicking Merge PDF.
This can be useful when combining a cover page, report sections, supporting documents, forms, invoices, or appendices that need to appear in a particular sequence.

Remove PDFs You Don't Need

If you accidentally select the wrong document, you can remove it without starting the process again. Click the × button beside the PDF you want to remove. If you want to completely restart the selection, use the Clear All button.

Choose a Custom Output Filename

The output filename is set to merged.pdf by default. You can replace it with a name that is easier to recognize, such as combined-report.pdf, project-documents.pdf, or application-files.pdf.

How Does the PDF Merger Work?

After you click Merge PDF, the tool processes the selected PDF files one at a time. The pages from each source document are copied into a new PDF according to the order displayed in the file list.
While the files are being processed, the tool displays a status message showing the current progress. Once the new PDF has been created, the download button becomes available.
The tool uses the pdf-lib JavaScript library to create and process the merged PDF document.

When Is a PDF Merger Useful?

Combining PDFs can be useful in many everyday situations. Instead of keeping several related documents separately, you can put them into one file when a single document is more convenient.
  • Combine different sections of a report into one PDF.
  • Put supporting documents into a single file.
  • Combine invoices or records related to the same project.
  • Join downloaded PDF documents before sharing them.
  • Organize several documents for easier storage.
  • Combine application-related documents into one PDF.
  • Keep multiple project documents together in a single file.

Privacy and File Processing

The provided tool code reads the selected PDF files using browser file APIs and uses JavaScript with pdf-lib to create the merged document. The code does not contain an application-specific upload request that sends the selected PDFs to a Smallertools server for merging.
The resulting PDF is created in the browser and prepared for download. The page does load the pdf-lib library from an external CDN, so this should not be interpreted as a claim that the entire webpage makes no external network requests.

Limitations

  • At least two PDF files are required before the merge can start.
  • The tool is designed for PDF files and does not merge Word documents or image files.
  • Large PDFs or a large number of files may require more browser memory and processing time.
  • A damaged or unusual PDF may fail during processing.
  • The tool merges complete PDF files rather than individual pages.
  • It does not provide PDF text or image editing features.
  • It does not provide individual page selection or page rearrangement.
  • The code does not specify a fixed maximum file count or file-size limit.
